Historical Note

The Western Continent (Ship) was built at Pembroke, ME in 1853. The ship sailed for Boston-based merchant shipping company Bates & Co., and was active from 1853-1867. In 1856, the ship sailed under Captain Frederick Burnham; in 1861, Captain William Collagan was the master. The ship sailed on voyages to Boston, New York, Valparaiso, San Francisco, the Chincha Islands, Manila, Rio de Janeiro, Hong Kong, Bangkok, Whampoa, Shanghai, Singapore, Akyab, Port Louis, Falmouth, Bremen, Sunderland, Bassein, Schiedam, Canton, Macao, and New Bedford.
