Biographical Note
William Henderson Gilman was born to Robert Hale Gilman and Mary (Bordman) Gilman. He had one brother, Benjamin Ives Gilman. After his father's death, his mother married John Douglas Bates. William H. Gilman and his brother Benjamin (who later changed his name to Ives Gilman Bates) briefly ran a grocery business in St. Louis, MO. After the business failed, Gilman joined the Navy as an Assistant Paymaster, working on the U.S.S. Vandalia and the U.S.S. Eastport. Gilman died in Boston in July 1869.
