Biographical Note
Edward Carrington Bates was born on January 11, 1811 to Caleb Bates (1774-1820) and Mary (Douglas) Bates (1773-approximately 1853). In the early 1830s, he worked as an agent for Bates & Co., a firm run by his elder brother John Douglas Bates (1797-1863). He later worked as an agent for the Cunard Line, and managed his own firm. Edward C. Bates died on December 26, 1872.
