Subseries C. William Wallach Crowninshield (1833-1874) Papers includes ships papers, orders, correspondence, newspaper clippings, and a scrapbook of art work. Ships papers include the ships Bell of the West, USS Marblehead, USS Mayflower and USS Montauk. Official orders are from William's time with the United States Navy. The newspaper clippings relate to the ironclads Monitor and Merrimac and their confrontation at Fort Monroe, Newport News, Virginia in 1862, and the collision of corvette Oneida and steamer Bombay near Yokohama in 1870.
