Scope and Content Note

The Edmund Kimball Papers consist of ships' papers, deeds, mortgages, materials about Alabama Claims, and an account book of this Marblehead, Massachusetts merchant and ship owner. The collection is divided into four series.

Series I. Ships' Papers is a collection of materials related to the vessels Anna Kimball, Belle of the Sea, and Elizabeth Kimball, including drafts issued during the construction of the Anna Kimball.

Series II. Alabama Claims concerns a claim by Edmund Kimball and his heirs for incurred losses during the Civil War. These materials include the deposition of Charles H. Kimball before the Court of Commissioners of Alabama Claims, correspondence between Kimball and his attorney, and miscellaneous related correspondence.

Series III. Deeds and Mortgages includes deeds and mortgages for property in Marblehead, Maine, and New York.

Series IV. Fisheries Account Book contains entries related to several fishing schooners owned by Edmund Kimball, as well as accounts with several individuals. Also is included is an index to the accounts.

Biographical Sketch

Edmund Kimball was born in Wenham, Massachusetts, on 24 September 1786, the son of Thomas and Huldah Porter Kimball. He first married Mary Hooper of Marblehead, daughter of Asa and Deliverance Knight Hooper, on 13 June 1813. She died on 15 May 1826 after bearing him six children. On 19 October 1828 he married Lydia Mugford Russell of Marblehead, daughter of John R. and Elizabeth Warner Russell. She bore him eight children.

Mr. Kimball was a successful merchant and owner of a number of vessels outright or in part. He began his career by owning several fishing schooners as well as selling general merchandise, then ventured into offshore trade with larger vessels, many of which were built by Marblehead shipwrights. He moved to Marblehead in 1807 and lived there for about 45 years before returning to Wenham about 1853. He died in Wenham on 22 August 1879.
