Scope and Content Note

The George V. Jordan Papers cover the years 1847 to 1880, and document the numerous voyages made by this shipmaster out of Saco, Maine, and Boson, to the Virgin Islands, Barbados, Havana, Calcutta, Australia, France, Liverpool, Antwerp, Philadelphia, Charleston, New Orleans, and San Francisco. The collection has been divided into two series.

Series I. Ships' Papers contains the papers of individual ships, the schooners Charles Cooper, Martha A. Nott, and Wallace. These papers are dated from 1847 to 1872.

Series II. Correspondence and Accounts contains miscellaneous business and personal correspondence and accounts.

Biographical Sketch

George Vaughn Jordan was born August 1845 in Maine. Jordan was a ship master who sailed out of Saco, Maine, and Boston and went to the Virgin Islands, Barbados, Havana, Calcutta, Australia, France, Liverpool, Antwerp, Philadelphia, Charleston, New Orleans, and San Francisco. He married Jeanette, born October 1845, in New York. They had one daughter, Nettie, who was born June 1879 in Iowa. According to the 1900 Federal Census, George became a farmer, raising livestock in Iowa.
