Samuel K. Gilman Papers, 1806, 1845-1884, undated

 Collection
Identifier: MSS 671

Scope and Content Note

The Samuel K. Gilman Papers contain prose, poetry, and lectures. The majority of the collection appears to have been written by Gilman and focuses on the temperance movement. This collection has been divided into two series.

Series I. Works by Gilman contains either original works or works transcribed by Gilman. These items have either been signed by Gilman, or have been presumed to be by Gilman, as they are in the same handwriting as those items signed by Gilman. Included in this series are materials on temperance, including notes and lectures or part of lectures.

Series II. Other contains prose, poetry, and lectures that are not signed by their author; it is possible that they were written by Gilman. This series also contains correspondence, most of which are introduction letters recommending Gilman as a public speaker. The folder of correspondence includes a bill addressed to Gilman's wife.

Biographical Sketch

Samuel K. Gilman was born in approximately 1819 to John K. and Abigail Gilman in Newburyport, Massachusetts. He was a trader, and appears to have enjoyed writing prose and poetry. Based on the material in this collection, it is possible that he had a career as a public speaker, and lectured on religious topics and the temperance movement. He married Lucy A. M. Wilson, the daughter of Joseph and Elizabeth Wilson, in 1848. Gilman may have died in 1884 (Ancestry.com).
