Scope and Content Note

The Salem Union League Records include a constitution, by-laws, records of committee meetings, roster of members, and list of officers created by the Salem Union League, Council H, No. 105, from 1863 to 1864. This collection includes bound volumes of records created by the members of the Salem Union League. A constitution, by-laws, roster of members and list of officers all connect Salem individuals with leadership roles in this organization. Records from committee meetings outline the role these individuals played in fostering patriotic sentiment during the war, such as public meetings at Mechanics Hall, patriotic concerts, and gatherings at member's homes. This material has been arranged chronologically.

Historical Sketch

A Union League is an organization established during the American Civil War to promote loyalty to the Union and the policies of Abraham Lincoln. They were also known as Loyal Leagues. The Salem Union League was established in 1863 to promote patriotic sentiment in the local Salem community. A constitution and by-laws outlined roles within the league, including positions for President, Vice-President, Secretary and Treasurer. Members included well-known local individuals such as Manuel Fenollosa, Robert Rantoul, Joseph Stickney, William G. Choate and Joseph H. Webb.
