Scope and Content Note

The Bartlett Family Papers consist of deeds and other legal documents of Josiah and Richard Bartlett of Newbury and Newburyport, Massachusetts. It also includes deeds of Oliver and Ezekiel Hale. A detailed chronological item list, summarizing each document, was created in 1981, by an unknown individual, and is included in the collection register at the front of the box. This collection has been divided into two series.

Series I. Land Deeds and Related Papers contains deeds pertaining to the purchase of land, including houses and highways. Some of these papers were not registered with a town. This series also contains information about Meeting House pews that belonged to family members.

Series II. Other contains family wills, recorded deathbed wishes, and a photograph of Ezra Bartlett with a short biography of him on the back.

Biographical Sketches

Richard Bartlett was born in approximately 1648, and was a cordwainer in Newbury, Massachusetts. He died on April 17, 1724.

Josiah Bartlett was a yeoman in Newbury, Massachusetts. He lived during the mid-eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries; the last document in this collection that his name is on is dated 1805.

Josiah Bartlett, Jr. was a cordwainer in Newbury, Massachusetts. His name appears on some of the later documents in this collection, beginning in 1781 through 1795.

Ezra Bartlett was born in Kingston, New Hampshire on September 13, 1770, the youngest son of Governor Josiah and Mary Bartlett. He graduated from Dartmouth College, and became a physician in Warren, New Hampshire. He later became a judge, a state Senator, and member of the Governor's Council. He died on December 5, 1848.
