Biographical Sketch
Richard Dalton Tucker was born on January 27, 1833 to Charles Church Chandler Tucker and Caroline Louisa DeBlois of Boston, Massachusetts. Tucker practiced law before becoming a partner in the merchant house Peele, Hubbell and Company.
Peele, Hubbell and Company was established in 1822. They started trading in the city of Legazpi, in the province of Albay, Philippines, in 1858. Ogden E. Edwards and George H. Peirce, members of Peele, Hubbell and Co., were some of the first American merchants in the Philippines. Peele, Hubbell and Co., traded primarily in sugar, abaca (Manila hemp) and rice. Their partnerships grew to include Edwards, Peirce, Richard Dalton Tucker, Frederick Emory Forester, Horatio Nelson Palmer and R. A. Lane. By 1887 the American firm filed for bankruptcy due to the decline in sugar prices. At its height, Peele, Hubbell and Co. were said to be the largest merchant company in the sugar trade in Manila.
John Henry Gray, Tucker's uncle through marriage to his aunt Elizabeth Plant Tucker, was a lawyer in the Boston area. He died on June 24, 1839.
