Helen W. Jaques Papers, 1941-1948

 Collection
Identifier: MSS 241

Scope and Content Note

This collection contains correspondence and photographs pertaining to Helen Jaques' doll collection and interest in doll collecting. Many of the photographs are annotated as to the dolls' history.

The correspondence spans the years 1941 to 1948 and details Helen Jaques' avocation as a collector of antique dolls, toys, accessories, and paper dolls. There are about 150 letters and many additional notes. Many provide details about the dolls' origins, costumes, and construction. Other letters document the activities of Helen Jaques and her fellow doll collectors. Much of the correspondence is with Alice R. Andrews (Mrs. Earle E.), Hattie E. Johnson (Mrs. Henry E.), or Jennie S. Abbott, all of whom were members of The Doll Collectors of America, Inc. While most of the letters pertain exclusively to doll collecting, one letter of interest in 1944 refers to a spy named Dickinson who infiltrated the group and used the doll hobby as a cover before being arrested by the FBI.

Over 70 photographs depicting dolls in Helen Jaques' collection are also included. Many were likely prepared for publication by The Doll Collectors of America. Several are annotated with respect to the history and costume of the doll portrayed.
