Scope and Content Note
The Nathaniel B. Perkins papers document some activities of this Salem, Massachusetts, ship owner. It contains mostly correspondence and legal papers and has been arranged chronologically. It includes some papers of the schooner Vigilant. Of interest is a letter from Frank dated 1835 from Rio de Janeiro, which mentions a fight between a "Guineaman" ship and two Brazilian schooners of war, where the "Guineaman" ship had 500 slaves aboard. Folder 10 contains powers of attorney for James P. Cook and Thomas Hunt. Vessels mentioned are the ships Brookline, George, George Cabot, and Vigilant and the brig Governor Endicott.

Biographical Sketch
Nathaniel Brown Perkins was born in Salem, Massachusetts, on September 21, 1813, the son of Captain Joseph Perkins (born 1785) and Elizabeth Hunt (d. 1835).
Perkins was a ship owner. He served on the School Committee in 1853-1854 and was Treasurer of the Essex Marine Railway. He also served as Treasurer of the Phillips Wharf property.
He married Susan Elizabeth Breed (1816-1891) in 1836 and they had six children: Anna Frothingham (born 1840); George Holton (born 1842); Charles Willard (born 1845); Alice Delf (born 1852); Grace Hawthorne (1855-19470); and Edith Allen (born 1858).
He died on February 8, 1885 in Salem.
