Scope and Content Note

This collection contains correspondence of the Newhall family from 1851 until 1901, and covers topics such as family relationships, deaths in the family, attitudes about the Civil War, and politics. There is only one series in the collection.

Series I. Correspondence contains personal letters to Joseph Henry (1830-1907) and his wife Eliza, mostly from Joseph's father, Gilbert Grafton Newhall (1801-1863). There are also numerous letters by Eliza G. Newhall to her mother Elizabeth Endicott G. Newhall, in Salem, while she was on a Grand Tour of Europe, from 1868 until 1870.

Biographical Sketches

Gilbert Grafton Newhall was born in 1801. He was a Boston agent for Whipple's Gunpowder. Gilbert married Elizabeth Endicott Gray, the daughter of James and Elizabeth Endicott (Gray) in 1829. Gilbert died in 1863. Elizabeth Endicott (Gray) Newhall died in 1882. The Newhall family lived at 9 Pleasant Street in Salem, Massachusetts.

Joseph Henry Newhall was born in 1830, the son of Gilbert and Elizabeth Newhall. He married Eliza Millett, and they had three children together; two of the children died in childhood, their son, Francis, survived into adulthood. Joseph died July 17, 1907, and is buried in Mount Auburn Cemetery in Cambridge.

Eliza G. Newhall was born in 1840 to Gilbert and Elizabeth Newhall, and was the sister of Joseph Newhall.
