Scope and Content Note

Save Outdoor Sculpture! Survey Forms and Photographs represent the effort in 1993 and 1994 to gather information on outdoor public sculpture in Salem, Massachusetts, as part of a national project. The survey forms contain information about each sculpture such as basic description, location/jurisdiction, physical condition, and where supplementary information may be found. Photographs of each monument/sculpture are filed with each survey.

Historical Sketch

Save Outdoor Sculpture! survey forms were undertaken by the National Institute for the Conservation of Cultural Property, 3299 K Street NW, Washington, DC, to gather information on outdoor sculpture all over the United States. [The project is currently being run by Heritage Preservation in Washington.] Dean Lahikainen, Curator of American Decorative Arts of the Peabody Essex Museum, surveyed outdoor sculptures and memorials in Salem, Massachusetts, and donated copies of the surveys and 4 x 6 color photographs of the memorials to the museum. The original surveys, original photographs, and photograph negatives were sent to Washington, DC.
