Scope and Content Note

This collection contains genealogical information relating to the Tainter family. It has been organized into three series.

Series I. Papers contains some correspondence, the marriage certificate of Ebes Brown and Lovina Tainter (1847), and a newspaper clipping.

Series II. Photographs contains photographs of Tainter family members, including Edith Balch, Edward F. Balch, Elizabeth Balch, Elizabeth Stone (Perkins) Balch, Mr. and Mrs. Francis Cox, Dr. Arthur Kemble, Dr. William Mack, William Osgood, Thomas Perkins, and Rev. Dr. W. W. Sylvester. These were taken from two albums, one of which remains in the collection.

Series III. Memorabilia contains A History and Genealogy of the Descendants of Joseph Taynter, who sailed from England, April, A.D. 1638, and Settled in Watertown, Mass. by Dean W. Tainter published in Boston in 1859. Also included is a small box labeled "My Husbands Hair the dark curls 40 years of age, the grey at 59" containing a lock of hair from "Edith", recipes or home remedies, and other slips of paper. In addition there are six small photo albums of school children dated 1940-1946 in this series.

Biographical Sketch

Joseph Tainter (1613 -1690) came to the United States from England in the service of Nicholas Guy, a carpenter. He married Guy's daughter, Mary Guy (1619-1705) soon after their arrival [1638] and settlement in Watertown, Massachusetts. They had nine children.
