Scope and Content Note
The George E. Bailey papers document the business and personal life of this Salem, Massachusetts, ship captain. The collection has been organized into two series.
Series I. Shipping Papers contains Bailey’s business records. Subseries A. Ships’ Papers contains bills of lading, seamen’s articles, invoices, letters of instruction, accounts, bills of sale, and custom documents, and insurance policies for the ships on which Bailey sailed or mastered. The subseries is arranged alphabetically by ship name. Subseries B. Other Business Papers contains correspondence, accounts, receipts, two passports, and blank shipping forms. The folders of receipts may contain some personal receipts as well as business receipts. These materials are arranged chronologically.
Series II. Personal Papers contains receipts, notes payable, and information about the First Christian Union Society. Of interest is the physician’s note excusing Bailey from military duty dated 1837.

Biographical Sketch
George E. Bailey was born on August 22, 1800 in Salem, Massachusetts, to Thomas and Mary (Ellison) Bailey. He was a mariner and mastered ships to the West Indies and South America. In 1827, he married Cynthia Clarridge (1801-1885) and they had two children, Charlotte (1829-1909) and George E. (1831-1834). Bailey died on May 8, 1871, in Salem.
