Scope and Content Note
The Dr. John Manning Papers contain the personal correspondence, medical, shipping, business, and legal records of Dr. John Manning (1761-1841) and his sons, Dr. John Manning (1789-1852), James Manning (1805-1892), Joseph Bolles Manning (1787-1854), and Charles Bolles Manning (1799-1843). The bulk of these papers concern Dr. John Manning's (1761-1841) medical, shipping, and business papers. While John was a prominent Gloucester physician and shipping merchant, only a few of these records document his career. This collection has been divided into two series.
Series I. Dr. John Manning Papers reflect his years as a Gloucester physician, shipping merchant, and justice of the peace. His medical journal (Folder 1) lists patient name, date and type of visit, and price charged for his services. Papers for only two of John's ships, the brig Ocean and the sloop Mercury, are found in this collection. These ships' papers include correspondence, orders, crew lists, bills of lading, accounts, and receipts. The Miscellaneous Business Papers (Folder 4) include invoices for unidentified ships, a letter from John to Nathaniel Appleton and miscellaneous receipts. The bulk of John's legal papers contain deeds for land and property between his relatives and associates. Also included here are papers resulting from John's trusteeship of Elizabeth Saville's property. Miscellaneous Legal Papers (Folder 6) contain the deeds that were either derived from title searches by John or from his years as a Gloucester justice of the peace. Also found here are several wills for relatives or friends.
Series II. Family Papers mostly consists of letters to and from Dr. John Manning, Jr. (1789-1852). These include letters between Dr. John Manning (1761-1841) and his son John, Jr. (1789-1852), letters to John, Jr. from his brother Charles Bolles (1799-1843), and one letter from John, Jr. to John Brooks concerning a surgeon's position on the privateer Mammoth. The folder of legal papers (Folder 8) includes the legal and court papers of Judge Joseph Bolles Manning (1787-1854) and the legal papers for James Manning (1805-1892).

Biographical Sketch
Dr. John Manning (1761-1841), physician and shipping merchant, was born in Ipswich, Massachusetts, the first son of Dr. John and Lucy (Bolles) Manning. In 1778, John joined the American army in Rhode Island as a surgeon's assistant. While serving in Rhode Island, he was appointed the surgeon to Col. Wordsworth's Connecticut regiment. At the end of the war, John settled in Chester, New Hampshire, where he was a partner with Dr. Page. He returned to Ipswich in 1786 to marry Hannah Goodhue, by whom he had four surviving children. John and his new wife settled in Harbor Parish of Gloucester where they lived until 1798. They then moved to the head of Cape Ann, which is now known as Rockport, where they remained until their deaths.
In addition to being a respected and successful Gloucester physician, John also invested in many shipping ventures. He owned at least six vessels including the schooner Friendship, which was captured by the French in 1800. His ships sailed for the West Indies and Europe carrying grains, figs, and other cargoes.
John was a justice of the peace and a representative to the General Court for Gloucester from 1809 to 1814.
