Historical Sketch

The Essex Agricultural Society was formed on February 18, 1818 at Cyrus Cumming's tavern in Topsfield, Massachusetts. Membership encompassed all Essex County citizens interested in agricultural pursuits. The Society published yearly addresses, essays, and reports presented by members recounting their farming experiences and making helpful suggestions. The Society also held an annual exhibition which rotated to various towns in the county.

This collection is a reorganization of 4 volumes, 1 scrapbook, and 2 folders of manuscript material. With exception of the 1859 pamphlet listing entries for the Annual Cattle Show and Exhibition which was purchased in 1978, all the remaining manuscripts are from an unknown source.
