Scope and Contents

The Daniel W. Rogers, Jr. collection contains mostly business correspondence and records belonging to Daniel W. Rogers, Jr. (1791-1834), as well as personal papers of the Rogers family. The collection is divided into two series.

Series I. Daniel W. Rogers, Jr. (1791-1834)Papers has been divided into three subseries. Subseries A. Correspondence contains letters to Rogers pertaining to his work as a merchant, broker, and justice of the peace. Subseries B. Financial Papers contains two account books from Rogers & Pearson, as well as additional bills and receipts. Subseries C. Legal Documents contains property deeds, a will, powers of attorney, auction licenses, Rogers’ appointment certificate as a justice of the peace, and other documents.

Series II. Other Family Papers contains records and papers relating to other member of the Rogers family. Subseries A. Correspondence contains letters to Roger’s mother, Mercy; his father, John G. Rogers; and wife, Betsey Rogers and others, from friends and family. Subseries B. Other Financial Papers includes a waste book with entries by Daniel W. Rogers (1734-1800), continued by Rachel Ellery Rogers (1750-1833), and a small number of other bills and receipts.

Biographical / Historical

Daniel W. Rogers, Jr. was born in Gloucester, Massachusetts, August 31, 1791, to Mercy Rogers (neé Rogers) and John Gorham Rogers (b. 1762). He married Betsey Kimball on December 2, 1819. They had three children: Jonathan (b. 1821); Sarah Smith (b. 1822); and Daniel (b. 1826). He worked as a merchant with William B. Pearson in their business Rogers & Pearson and later carried on legal duties as an administrator of several estates. He also served as a Selectman for the Town of Gloucester from 1823 to 1830 and Town Treasurer in 1831 (Babson, 589-591). He was appointed as a justice of the peace for Essex County, Massachusetts in 1831. He died of consumption on March 9, 1834. See Appendix for the Rogers family tree.
