Historical Sketch
The Washington Rangers were organized on June 23, 1807 in Salem, Massachusetts, as a company for youths not yet eligible for military service. The members chose uniforms, elected officers, and routinely paraded in full dress and arms. The officers elected included both military and civil positions. For military service this included a captain commandant, a lieutenant, and sergeants. For civil positions, this included a clerk, and a standing committee. On September 14, 1807, Benjamin J. Pickman was unanimously chosen as the captain commandant. He served in this position until 1808 when he resigned.
