Identifier: MSS 27

Scope and Content Note

This collection consists of deeds, legal documents, and financial records of the Jaques family of Newbury and West Newbury, Massachusetts. It includes deeds of Parker Jaques, a will of Elisabeth Adams from West Newbury, financial receipts of Moody Jaques, and memoirs of Alonzo Jaques.

Folder 1 contains deeds and legal documents, many of which pertain to Parker Jaques. Documents includes description of a land purchase, a tax receipt, a bonding agreement, and an indenture agreement. Also present are copies of Benjamin Jaques' will (1782) and Elisabeth Adams' will (1838). (Elisabeth Adams was most likely Sarah Adams Jaques' younger sister.) Folder 2 contains papers of Alonzo P. Jaques (1820-1922). A memoir written in 1918 (at age 98) describes fishing on the Merrimack River in the early 1830s. Notes written in 1920 (at age 100) discuss a long-standing land dispute in West Newbury. Finally, there are two testimonials congratulating Alonzo Jaques on his 100th birthday, on October 20, 1920.

Folder 3 contains receipts belonging to Benjamin Jaques (from 1768 to 1775), Moody Jaques (from 1811 to 1860), and Jessie B. Jaques (1937). Folder 4 contains a partial genealogy of the Jaques family and a partial genealogy of the Stockman, Page, and Walsh families of Salisbury, Massachusetts. Folder 5 includes a diagram of the twelve tribes of Israel, and a letter to Moody Jaques from Mariah Goodridge, whom he later married, urging him to turn towards the Lord.
