The unit was formed circa 1808 as a part of the Squadron of Cavalry, 1st Brigade, 2nd Division of the Massachusetts Volunteer Militia. During the War of 1812, along with the other various organized companies in the Salem area, the Hussars responded to threats made by the British to the Massachusetts coast.
