Scope and Content Note

This collection contains papers of Moses Porter, a career army officer during the American Revolution and War of 1812. The papers include military correspondence and financial records and also personal papers and financial records. The collection has been organized in two series.

SERIES I. Military Papers contains military correspondence, reports, orders, and financial papers. There is extensive correspondence from Greenville, Ohio (1794-1796), Fort Niagara, New York (1802), and Natchitoches, Louisiana (1806). The financial records include extensive accounts, receipts, inventories, requisitions, contracts, and pay accounts documenting the needs of soldiers at frontier posts. Other papers include military orders, invitations, and also lists of personnel, provisions, and public property in Moses Porter's possession.

SERIES II. Personal Papers contains the personal correspondence, estate papers, and financial records of Moses Porter. The estate papers include correspondence, accounts, inventories, probate documents, memoranda, and other papers pertaining to Porter's death in 1822. Miscellaneous papers include memoranda, inventories, recipes, and invitations. The financial records include lists of stocks and investments managed by Porter's attorney, Andrew Sigourney. Also present are receipts, bills, and accounts concerning Porter's personal life. Finally, there are three documents pertaining to Captain Benjamin Porter, including a letter from Benjamin to his son Moses.

Biographical Sketch

Moses Porter was born on March 20, 1756, in Danvers, Massachusetts, the son of Benjamin and Sarah (Rea) Porter. He enlisted in the artillery at Bunker Hill and continued to serve in the regular army throughout his life. He was stationed at various posts throughout the United States including Fort Detroit, Fort Mackinac, Fort Niagara, and New Orleans. During the War of 1812 he was sent again to Fort Niagara with the rank of brevetted brigadier general and was later placed in command at Fort Norfolk, Virginia. Moses Porter died in Cambridge, Massachusetts, on April 14, 1822.
