Scope and Content Note

The William and David R. LeCraw Papers contain personal papers, correspondence, and shipping records pertaining to the many ships on which William and David LeCraw served and/or captained. This collection has been organized into two series; each series is arranged alphabetically by ship and then each ship chronologically by date/s sailed.

Series I. William LeCraw Papers is comprised of two subseries. Subseries A. Personal Papers contains William LeCraw's correspondence to and from his wife, Lydia, to and from his mother, as well as letters to his brother David R. LeCraw. Subseries B. Business Papers include ships' logbooks, bills, receipts, and other papers pertaining to the running of the various ships on whichWilliam LeCraw served or captained.

Series II. David R. LeCraw Papers contains David R. LeCraw's correspondence to and from his mother, as well as to his brother, William LeCraw.

Biographical Sketches

William LeCraw was born in approximately 1796 in Marblehead, Massachusetts, the son of John LeCraw and Rebecca Ross LeCraw. William became a mariner and eventually attained the rank of Master Mariner. William married Lydia Ireson of Maine in approximately 1820. William and Lydia LeCraw had a son named William who was born in 1821 and a daughter named Lydia who was born in approximately 1827.

David Ross LeCraw was born on July 12, 1801 in Marblehead. David was a mariner. He commanded or sailed on the Delia Walker, the Charles Hill (Ship), the Algonquin (Ship), and the Empress (Ship). He married Hannah Russell Girdler of Marblehead in 1835. David and Hannah had three sons, David, William and Charles, and a daughter, Rebecca.
