Scope and Content Note
This collection contains loose photographs from the late 1800s through the mid-1900s. The photographs are mainly landscapes of Townships in Maine, with a few photos from New Hampshire. Some photos contain pictures of buildings (camps), dams, logs, and people.
The collection has been organized into three series. Series I. Maine Lands contains photographs of logging camps, operations, dams, and general landscapes owned or leased by the family in Maine. Most photos have descriptions written in pencil on the reverse. Some photos have updated notes, written in the 1970s. Photos were donated in labeled envelopes, therefore each folder contains the photos from one envelope. This series is arranged chronologically. Series II. Miscellaneous contains group portraits of unidentified persons and a photograph of a watercolor of the Salem Depot. This series is arranged chronologically. Series III. Negatives contain negatives from envelopes and two albums and a few photographs that were stored in the albums. The negatives were removed from envelopes and numbered folios and sleeved in polypropylene for handling. The albums contain indices in the front which have been photocopied and are stored in the first folder for each album. This series is organized first by negatives removed from the folios and then by loose negatives within envelopes. Negatives removed from albums maintain the original order (as numbered within each negative album). See Appendix I for order and listing of negatives.

Historical Sketch
The Pingree family started acquiring land in Maine and New Hampshire in the mid-1800s and the heirs continue to manage much of this land today (mainly in Maine). This collection of loose photographs from the late 1800s through the mid-1900s is mainly photographs of landscapes. Most of the photos seem to have been taken by Stephen Wheatland (1897-1987) or his brother David Pingree Wheatland (1898-1993) and are initialed. Some photos are marked H. S. F. which is believed to stand for Horace S. Follansbee, a long-time employee.
