Historical Sketch

In September 1897, members of committees of the East and the Barton Square Societies of Salem, Massachusetts, met to consider forming a united society. On April 24, 1899, the Independent Congregational Church in Barton Square in Salem united with East Church Society and Second Church in one corporation to be called the Second Church in Salem. Services were held in the church at Washington Square (now the Salem Witch Museum) with Alfred Manchester elected Pastor. In 1923, the North Church and Second Church reunited with the First Church of Salem. The East Church reunited with the First Church in 1956, and the former East Church building of 1844-1846 is now being used as the Salem Witch Museum.
