Scope and Content Note
The James Koopman papers contain ships' papers and some personal correspondence. The collection has been divided into two series.
Series I. Ships' Papers contains bills of lading, disbursements, charter party agreements, invoices and receipts, articles of agreement, and miscellaneous ships' papers. These appear to be from vessels of which Koopman was master.
Series II. Personal Correspondence contains correspondence between Koopman and his wife.

Biographical Sketch
James Koopman was born on June 3, 1817 in Sweden. He later lived in Freeport, Maine, where he worked as a ship master and captain. James was married to Alice S., presumably until her death in 1856; he then married Mary M. He died on April 10, 1894.
