Scope and Content Note

The James Bott Papers consist of Bott's business papers from his carriage and saddle making business, and family papers, including legal and estate papers. This collection has been divided into two series.

Series I. Business Papers contains bills and receipts from James Bott's carriage and saddle making business, from 1787 to 1831. Also included in this series is an account book from 1803 until 1832.

Series II. Family Papers contains legal papers, estate papers, and related correspondence for the Bott family. Legal papers include lease agreements, bills of sale, and business agreements. Estate papers include wills, and guardianship papers. Thomas Bott's estate papers discuss the building of his tomb, and the settling of his accounts after his death at sea in 1804. Lynch Bott's shipping papers contain documents relating to his shipping business.

Biographical Sketch

James Bott was born in Tudbury, England in 1745. He married Dorothy (known as Dolly) Newhall, the daughter of Samuel and Mary Newhall, of Lynn, on March 15, 1768. Bott operated a carriage chaise and saddle making business in Salem. He died December 28, 1829.

James and Dolly had a number of children. Two of their sons, John and James Bott Jr., were carriage chaise builders. Thomas Bott, another son, born in 1782, died in 1804 on board the brig, Mary while it was in Jamaica. Another son, Lynch Bott (1785 to 1844), was a mariner in Salem.
