Scope and Content Note
The John M. Ward Papers includes bills and billheads, correspondence, shipping articles, and liability policies from John M. Ward in his position as captain and agent for the Henry Withington (Schooner), Luther T. Garretson (Schooner), and O. D. Witherall (Schooner). This collection has been arranged into two series.
Series I. Ships' Papers contains records from the ships owned and operated by John M. Ward. Series I is divided into four subseries. The first three subseries, Henry Withington (Schooner), Luther T. Garretson (Schooner), and O. D. Witherall (Schooner) are individually designated by ship. Records include bills, billheads, and correspondence, often organized by trip, in addition to liability policies and shipping articles. Subseries four, Other Vessels, contains an account book and bills for additional ships.
Series II. Business Records contains correspondence between John M. Ward and his business partners.

Biographical Sketch
John M. Ward was captain and agent for others for the Henry Withington (Schooner), Luther T. Garretson (Schooner), and O. D. Witherall (Schooner). Ward was in business with George D. Rogers and Charles F. Webb, shipbrokers at the company Rogers & Webb, located in the Cunard Building at 126 State St. in Boston, MA. Later, Ward moved his office to 110 State St, Boston.
Ward lived with his wife at 386 Newbury St. in Boston, MA and traveled to Ward Cottage on Harbor Ave in Marblehead Neck, MA. He was a member of the Corinthian Yacht Club in Marblehead, MA.
