Scope and Content Note

The John Winn papers contain materials from Winn’s business dealings in the lumber trade. This collection has been divided into two series.

Series I. Business Papers contains materials from Winn’s lumber business, including account books, township accounts, and accounts with specific individuals or corporations, receipts and vouchers. Persons with sensitivity to mold should use caution when viewing the cash book, 1845-1856 (box 1, folder 1).

Series II. Winn and Paulk Papers contain papers from John Winn’s business dealings, both as a partner and as a legal opponent, with Ephraim Paulk, and E. Paulk and Paulk Company. This series includes legal and financial papers, deeds, and an account book belonging to E. Paulk and Paulk Company detailing mortgage payments, lumber, and other items; loose materials found within the account book have been left interleaved in the book. There are also summaries of Supreme Court proceedings between the two parties and testimonies, and some miscellaneous papers.

Biographical

John Winn was involved in the lumber trade in Bangor, Maine, and acted as an agent for David Pingree (1795-1863) of Salem, Massachusetts. In 1847, Pingree sold an undivided share of land in Maine, part of T7 R12, to Winn. Pingree, E. S. Coe, and Winn separated out a 500-acre tract of T7 R12 for the Chamberlain Farm. Winn was the treasurer of Old Town Bridge Corporation.
