Historical Sketch

The Samuel G. Glover was built at Charlestown Neck, Massachusetts, by Joshua Magoun in 1857 for Thaddeus Nichols and Theodore Glover of Boston, and Calvin and William Adams of New York. She was a two-decked bulk carrier with a registered tonnage of 910.44 tons, was 161 feet long, had a beam of 34 feet, a depth-of-hold of 22 feet, and drew 20 feet of water. Foster Waterman and others purchased the Samuel G. Glover on August 1, 1867, for $37,000. Under Waterman's management, with John Dreyer as master, she made a voyage to San Francisco with general merchandise, sailed to Valparaiso, Chile, in ballast, and entered into a charter party to carry guano to Europe. She sailed from Valparaiso to Callao and Chincha Islands, Peru, and loaded guano for Hamburg. While on the Hamburg leg of the voyage, Waterman sold the ship to Nathaniel H. Emmons and others on February 13, 1869, for $33,000, the ship to be transferred after safe arrival at Hamburg. Captain Dreyer surrendered the ship to Captain Lewis F. Miller on May 13, 1869. The 1876 MVUS lists it as "sold foreign." She is no longer listed as American registered after 1875. Her ultimate fate is not known.
