Scope and Content Note

The Malcolm Miller papers contain all forms of literature of this Salem, Massachusetts writer, including novels, short stories, and poems. Much of the material dates from the later 1980s and early 1990s, and reflects a New England costal town setting, specifically the North Shore. Others are set in Montreal. The collection is divided into six series: Novels, Plays, Prose Poem, Novel Fragment, Short Stories, and Poems. Each series is arranged alphabetically. All manuscripts are typed, undated, and signed by Miller. A complete listing of the short stories and poems can be found in Appendix I.

Biographical Sketch

Malcolm Miller was born in Salem, Massachusetts, on October 20, 1930. He graduated from McGill University in Montreal, Canada, and has served in the United States Navy. Mr. Miller was a prolific poet whose first book, "The Kings Have Donned Their Final Mask," was chosen one of the Fifty Books of the Year 1969 by the American Institute of Graphic Arts. Notable among his dozens of poetry titles are "The Emperor of Massachusetts" (1970) and "The Summer of the True Gods" (1978). He turned to self-publishing 58 collections of poetry including "Into the Higher Air" (1992), "The Country of Pure Music" (1992), "Poems that Need You" (1993), "Amazing Stranger" (1998), and "I Have Wasted My Life So Beautifully" (2001).

He gave up writing because of ill health in 2013, shortly after he was selected as the featured writer in the literary magazine "Soundings East." Miller authored many letters to the editors of the Salem News, the Jewish Journal and the Boston Globe. He died on September 5, 2014 of natural causes.

The bulk of this material was purchased in January 1991 (acc #90072). Two poems were donated by the author in March 1992 (acc #92002). Two additional poems were donated by the author in October 1993 (acc #93035). The manuscript of "The River of Muddy Water Bears Gold" was purchased in August 1994 (acc #94024).
