Biographical Sketch

Members of the Dimond Family were descended from Captain Benjamin Diman (baptized 1769, d. circa 1803) and Ruth (Smith) Diman (b. 1771). They were a family of mariners living primarily in Salem, Massachusetts. Individual members of the family are listed variously under the names Diman, Dimon, and Dimond, as the family name transitioned over two generations from Diman to Dimond.

Benjamin and Ruth Diman married in 1792. In 1804, the widowed Ruth, identified at that time as Ruth Dimond, married Captain William Mugford. William and Ruth Mugford had five children: George (b. 1805); Sarah (b. 1808); Charles (b. 1809); Thomas (b. 1812); and Henry (b. 1813). Henry Mugford married Mary Ann Page (b. 1818) in 1844.

David S. Dimond, Sr. (b. 1797), son of Benjamin and Ruth Diman, was a mariner and a member of the Salem Charitable Marine Society. He married Abigail Hinman (b. circa 1805) in 1823. David and Abigail Dimond had four children: Abigail (b. 1825); David, Jr. (b. 1827); Benjamin (b. 1832); and Ruth Ann (1834-1836). David S. Dimond, Jr., and Benjamin Dimond were mariners like their father. Benjamin Dimond was second officer of the Bark Brighton in 1849. He died in Mozambique while second officer of the Bark Argentine in 1858. Salem directories from 1850 and 1851 list Mrs. Abigail Dimond as a seamstress and her daughter as a dress maker.
