Scope and Content Note
This collection contains business records from 1866 to 1878 relating to the shipment of goods, primarily molasses, sugar, and flour, by the Churchill, Brown & Manson Company. Each series is arranged by vessel where specified, then chronologically.
Series I. Bills and Receipts is organized into three subseries. Subseries A. Freight and Wharfage represents the bulk of the collection and includes bills of lading and receipts for the shipment and stowing of sugar, syrup, molasses, and flour to and from ports in Cuba, Portland, Boston, St Louis, and New Orleans. Subseries B. Towage contains four receipts for towage in Boston, and Subseries C. Repair contains one receipt for the repair of trucks in Portland.
Series II. Financial Records consists of canceled checks from St. Louis and Portland.

Historical Sketch
The Churchill, Brown & Manson Company, also known as the Churchill, Browns & Manson Company, was a shipping company based in Portland, Maine, which traded primarily with Cuba in sugar and molasses. The company started an active branch office in Boston in 1867. James Morrill Churchill was the senior member of the firm. The other partners were John Bundy Brown, his sons Philip Henry Brown and John Marshall Brown, and Benjamin S. Manson. John Bundy Brown was was head of the Portland Sugar Company, one of the leading manufacturing houses in the country, and founded and operated the private banking house J. B. Brown & Sons with his sons Philip and John. Philip Henry Brown founded the West India house of the Churchill, Brown & Manson Company.
