Series III. Financial Records have been divided into two subseries. Each subseries has been arranged chronologically. Subseries A. Series V. Other Papers include copies of newspapers, Ware's two ship-board diaries, a circular, a photograph, and a small burlap bag.

Research and Writings on West Africa include maps, correspondence, photographs, and copies of an article Dr. Ware wrote about the health hazards of the West African trader. Subseries B. Research and Writings on Enoch Richmond Ware include correspondence, notes, research materials, and copies of articles Dr. Ware wrote about his grandfather in the 1950s and 1960s. Subseries C. George E. Brooks, Jr. Material includes correspondence, an article, and drafts of a book Brooks wrote. Subseries D. Family Papers contain Dr. Ware's father's medical journal, genealogy, and photographs. Subseries E. Other contains two copies of American Neptune that Dr. Ware probably used for research.

Some original order was kept; however, there is no distinction made between original folder titles and those provided by the processor. Two logbooks were removed from the collection and cataloged separately.

Biographical Sketch

Enoch Richmond Ware, a merchant and trader with countries on the west coast of Africa, was born in Winterport, Maine, January 2, 1819. In his teens he served as a cabin boy on a Maine coasting vessel. Later he went to Rio de Janeiro where he remained for two years. He returned to the United States at age twenty and in 1839 was dispatched as a supercargo on his first voyage to the west coast of Africa on the brig Robert. He was a trading agent from 1839 to 1851, representing several employers. He gradually became part owner of the cargoes of the vessels on which he sailed, until finally in 1850, he established his own commission house, E. R. Ware and Company, in New York City. From then, until his death in 1874, he carried on a thriving commerce with West Africa.

On July 21, 1846, after a courtship of almost five years, Ware married Mary Coutant Peck (b. 1823) in Sing Sing (now Ossining), New York. They had 6 children: Mary V. (born 1847); Laura (who died young); William Richmond (born 1855); George (who died young); Edward James (born 1859); and Gertrude Talbot (1861-1893).

At the onset of the Civil War in 1861, Ware was 42 years old with three children and one on the way. He did not serve, but sent two substitutes at $100 each. Ware retired to live in Yonkers, New York, where he died on July 15, 1874 at age 55.

Edward Richmond Ware (1892-1974) M.D., of Los Angeles, California was a physician, born and educated in New York City, and the grandson of Enoch Richmond Ware. In 1951 he traveled to the West African coast, going to a small local hospital in Liberia where he briefly observed some of the diseases mentioned in his grandfather's diaries. Dr. Ware wrote several articles based on his grandfather's source materials; his research papers, notes, and early manuscripts are included in this collection.
