Scope and Content Note
This collection contains the papers of Benjamin Larcom, including ships’ papers, correspondence, and notes. The collection is arranged into three series, Thomas (Schooner), Correspondence, personal and business, and Genealogy and notes.
Series I. Thomas (Schooner) contains records related to the schooner Thomas, which Benjamin Larcom captained. This includes a pilotage document from Bordeaux, France, correspondence from Larcom’s time aboard Thomas, and a receipt for services aboard the schooner.
Series II. Correspondence, personal and business includes records written to and from Larcom from both his personal and business acquaintances. This includes letters to Larcom’s brother Jonathan and correspondence relating to business conducted with Israel Thorndike. Additionally, a letter written by Larcom to his wife Charlotte in 1806 and a letter written to Larcom from Baring Brothers in 1809 were moved to this collection from the Larcom Family Papers, MSS 8.
Series III. Genealogy and notes contains notes on the genealogy of the Larcom family, a sketch of St. Michael’s Church, and notes on trigonometry.

Biographical Sketch
Benjamin Larcom was born on August 20, 1776 in Beverly, Massachusetts to Jonathan Larcom and Abigail Ober. He became a ship's captain and engaged in international maritime trade in the East Indies. Larcom married Charlotte Ives on January 10, 1804 and she bore him two children, Charlotte Ives and Adeline Barrett, before her death on March 21, 1810. Larcom remarried on November 21, 1811 to Lois Barrett and the couple had eight children: Benjamin (b. 1814); Louisa Barrett (1815-1863); Emeline A. (b. 1817); Jonathan (b. 1818); Abigail Ober (b. 1820); Lydia Smith (b. 1822); Lucy (1824-1893); and Octavia (b. 1827). Larcom died on January 10, 1832, at the age of 55.

This material was a gift from Mrs. Elizabeth W. Huntoon in August, 1960 (acc 15,188). Some material in Folder 2 in Box 2 was removed from the Larcom Family Papers, MSS 8, and added to this collection. In 2017, additional items were purchased, a bill of lading from 1808 and a letter regarding shipment of goods and duties to Spain (#2007.015). These items were added to Box 2, Folder 1. Additionally, a letter written by Larcom to his wife Charlotte in 1806, and a letter written to Larcom from Baring Brothers in 1809, were moved to this collection from the Larcom Family Papers, MSS 8.
