Historical Sketch
The Allegash (Alaguash) Dam Company was incorporated on June 3, 1851 for the purpose of erecting and maintaining a dam across the Allagash Falls on the Allagah River in township 15 R.11. The purpose of the dam was for driving and transporting logs and timber down the river and past the waterfall. The company charged a fee for logs that passed through the dam—six cents per thousand feet board measure and six cents per ton for all hewn timber. A president, secretary, treasurer, and three directors were chosen yearly.
