Scope and Content Note

The George W. Hale papers document Hale's career as a master mariner and United States shipping agent in Liverpool, England. The volumes of disbursements, port charges, and crew accounts record his activity as a sea captain. The remaining volumes reflect Hale's Liverpool activities. While Hale lists himself as a shipping agent, the extant documentation of his Liverpool business relates only to shipping-master activities. Thee account books list crew members and their wage accounts for America-bound vessels.

Biographical Sketch

George William Hale, master mariner, was born on January 8, 1825, the son of Moses and Anstice (Jacques) Hale of Newburyport, Massachusetts. George began his career as a sea captain. Among the ships he commanded were the Albert Edward, Antelope, Charles H. Lunt, Don Quixote, Guiding Star, Lebanon, Mariposa, Ocean Queen, Pacific, Progress, and Sancho Panza. He joined the Newburyport Marine Society in 1855 and was an active member.

He married Elizabeth Bayley Cheney (born 1823) on February 6, 1850. They had two daughters and one son. By 1871, Hale had retired from the sea and opened a shipping masters' office in Liverpool. England. His wife and daughters accompanied him to England. He returned to Newburyport, in approximately 1886 and resided there until his death in June 1891.
