Scope and Content Note

The Samuel Staples and Son records contain materials from the merchant firm's business. These papers include invoices, bills, receipts, business correspondence, and ships' papers. This collection has been divided into three series.

Series I. Invoices, Bills, and Receipts contains invoices, bills, and receipts that do not pertain to a specific ship, or in a few cases, pertain to multiple ships. These have been arranged by date.

Series II. Correspondence contains business correspondence to and from Samuel Staples and Son merchant firm. This series also contains a folder of paint samples sent to the firm, possibly of paint that was used on its ships.

Series III. Ships' Papers contains papers related to specific ships. This includes, invoices, bills, receipts, correspondence, bills of lading, charter party agreements, insurance policies, and customs certificates. The folder "'unidentifiable vessels"' contains ships' papers for ships whose name cannot be clearly read.
