Scope and Content Note

This collection consists of receipts, accounts, account books, and business papers belonging to Thomas Brown (circa 1803-1872), a glue manufacturer in Marblehead, Massachusetts.

The collection contains over 1000 receipts. These receipts detail the business of glue making in the mid-nineteenth century in New England. In addition, a few receipts pertain to personal expenses, such as town taxes and the children’s schooling. Also present are a few accounts, five account books, business correspondence, and one indenture contract.

Biographical Sketch

Thomas Brown (circa 1803-1872) resided in Marblehead, Massachusetts, and was in business as a glue manufacturer. He married Elizabeth Hunt and they had eight children: Thomas, Elizabeth, Adeline, Caroline, William, John, George, and Ruth.
