Scope and Content Note

The New Hampshire Militia Records include company roll books for the 1st Regiment, 1st Company of the New Hampshire Militia. The includes company roll books of the 1st Regiment, 1st Company of the New Hampshire Militia from 1825 – 1831. The company roll books contain names of all commissioned and noncommissioned officers as well as a tally of supplies distributed to these individuals. Printed instructions from the Adjutant-General's office are found at the beginning of each book.

Historical Sketch

The New Hampshire Militia was first organized in March 1680 by New Hampshire Colonial President John Cutt. The militia formed units for the French and Indian War and served in General George Washington's Continental Army during the Revolutionary War. During the early 1800s, the militia maintained the ranks. At the beginning of the American Civil War the state raised volunteer regiments to aid in the war effort. In 1879 the militia was designated by the state as the New Hampshire National Guard.
