Scope and Content Note

This collection contains correspondence, logs, receipts, wage accounts, receipts, and other papers related to ships on which Charles Hamilton served as crew or captain. The ship John De Costa is the most thoroughly documented, but records are included for the ships RD Shepherd, the James Montgomery, the Anna Decatur, and the Kate Prince. Logbooks are included for the John de Costa, James Montgomery, and the R.D. Shepherd. The John de Costa travelled between San Francisco and Queenstown, Liverpool and Rangoon; the James Montgomery and the R.D. Shepherd (built between 1845 and 1846 by the firm Fernald and Petigrew of Portsmouth, New Hampshire) shipped out of New Orleans. Also included is a letter from Charles Hamilton to his wife, composed over the span of two months, describing the activities on a voyage on the John De Costa. Each series is arranged chronologically.

Biographical Sketch

Charles Hamilton was born on November 1, 1826 in Boston, Massachusetts. He and his wife Martha E. (born circa 1829) lived in Wrentham after marrying and had two sons. Charles (born 1856) attended Harvard University Dental School and became a dentist. George W. (born 1858) was an engineer.
