Scope and Content Note

This collection contains the personal and business papers of Andrew B. Vennard, a New Hampshire ship owner. The collection is divided into four series. Series I. Ships' Papers is divided into four subseries: Emma (Brig), Eagle (Schooner), Marine (Bark), and other ships' records. Each subseries is arranged by ship name and then chronologically. Document types include bills, receipts, invoices, contracts, and crew lists. Many receipts refer to cargo, which includes potatoes, rice, coffee, flour, and beef.

Series II. Correspondence consists of correspondence and is arranged alphabetically by correspondent, then chronologically. Letters included are from ship captains, lawyers, and relatives, though all correspondence relates to the shipping industry.

Series III. Insurance Policies consists of insurance policies for cargo and fire damage, and is arranged chronologically.

Series IV. Account Books contains account books for Vennard's various business endeavors.

Biographical Sketch

Andrew B. Vennard was born in 1808 to Captain George Vennard and Dorothy Clifford Bell in New Castle, New Hampshire. He was Treasurer of the Portsmouth and Concord Railroad. He was also the owner of many ships, including Arlitta, Armida, Emma, Eagle, Garden Key, Gent Brooks, Marine, Minerva, Oscar, Rinaldo, Telegraph, and Viola, that sailed to Louisiana, Alabama, Florida, and Brazil. His brothers, H. T. Vennard and Matthew B. Vennard, were captains of a few of the ships.

Vennard moved to Portsmouth, New Hampshire and married Ariadne Shapleigh Locke in 1835. They had seven children, Francis Allen, Andrew Bell, Abbie Underwood, William Lawrence, Emma Greenleaf, Helen Bell, and Franklin V.
