Scope and Content Note
The Richard and Mary K. Wheatland Family Papers include personal items, including a number of photo albums and loose photographs, correspondence, and some documents relevant to the Pingree family businesses. Many of the photographs have notes on the back in the hand of Mary Wheatland (1870-1962).
SERIES I. Photographs includes both loose photos and albums of family, friends, vacations, houses, and Maine vistas. Albums include an album given to Mary Wheatland for Christmas 1901 from her father, “J. R.” The album is entitled “Salem. Some Old Houses: Home-surroundings and Quaint Corners.” It includes photographs of Salem, some with narratives explaining how they relate to Mary’s life. Loose photographs have been sleeved and foldered, albums have been denoted as such. This series is arranged chronologically.
SERIES II. Mary K. Wheatland Personal Papers consists of correspondence and ephemera relating to her parents, children, grandchildren, and identified persons. This series also includes drafts and ephemera related to the Salem Thread & Needle Sewing Circle’s production of a play entitled “Shades of the House of Seven Gables” and a brief biography of her husband. This series is arranged chronologically.
SERIES III. Family Business Records is comprised of timberland and township accounts, correspondence, stock certificates from the estate of Stephen G. Wheatland, a journal, and notes on Norwegian timberlands. This series also includes a letterbook of correspondence, receipts, and invoices sent by Wheatland on behalf of his mother Ann Maria Wheatland, as her attorney. There are a few letters in the back of the book, pages 502 to 510, dated from May and June of 1926. This series is arranged chronologically.
SERIES IV. Miscellaneous contains an etching of Chestnut Street in Salem by R. F. Osbourne from 1889, a story (biographical?) entitled “The Rogers Sisters,” a letter to Mrs. Richard C. Curtis from the Trustees of The Peter Bent Brigham Hospital, an undated report entitled “Salem Privateering during the Revolution” by Richard Wheatland, and miscellaneous stamps, envelopes, and scraps of paper. This series is arranged chronologically.

Biographical Sketch
Richard Wheatland was born on May 13, 1872 to Stephen G. Wheatland (1824-1892) and Ann Maria Pingree (1846-1927) in Salem, Massachusetts. He graduated from the Groton School in 1891 and from Harvard College in 1895. After college he worked with his uncle, David Pingree (1841-1932), and helped to manage the timberlands. Wheatland was active in the Salem Fraternity and a trustee of the Peabody Museum of Salem, the East India Marine Society, and the Salem Hospital. He died March 28, 1944 in Topsfield, Massachusetts.
Mary Kemble Robinson was born on November 17, 1870 to John Robinson (1846-1925) and Elizabeth Rollins Kemble (1850-1935). She was an active member of the Massachusetts Horticultural Society, Bostonian Society, Essex Institute of Salem, Society for the Preservation of New England Antiquities, among other societies. She was a life fellow of the Peabody Museum of Salem where her father was director, and took active interest in many hospitals and welfare organizations. She died in 1962 at the age of 92 in Topsfield.
Wheatland and Robinson married on June 2, 1896 and together had five children: Stephen (1897-1987); David Pingree (1898-1993); Lucia Pickering (1899-1989); Anna (1900-1999); and Martha (1903-1997).
