Scope and Content Note

The Daniel W. Rogers Papers contains the business records of Daniel W. Rogers (1791-1834) and the personal papers of Daniel W. Rogers and the Rogers family. The collection is divided into four series.

Series I. Business Records has been divided into three subseries. Subseries A. Business Correspondence contains letters pertaining to Rogers' work as a merchant. Subseries B. Rogers & Pearson Business Records contains bills and receipts of goods. Subseries C. Bills and Receipts contains bills, receipts, and auction dues.

Series II. Personal Correspondence includes letters from Daniel W. Rogers to his mother Mercy, as well as letters to his brother. Also included is one letter from his aunt, Esther Rowe.

Series III. Estate Files consists of taxes, bills, and receipts for individual estates, probate records, legal documents and records documenting Rogers as the administrator of each estate. Also included is a file on Daniel W. Rogers' estate.

Series IV. Family Papers is comprised of letters from John G. Rogers to his wife Mercy, as well as letters from Mercy to her husband John, her daughter Elizabeth, and her sons. Also included are letters from John G. Rogers, Jr. to his mother and sisters, genealogy, legal documents, bills and receipts.

Biographical Sketch

Daniel W. Rogers was born in Gloucester, Massachusetts, August 21, 1791 to Mercy Rogers (nee Rogers) and John Gorham Rogers. He married Betsey Kimball on December 2, 1819. They had three children: Jonathan, Sarah, and Daniel. He worked as a merchant with William B. Pearson in their business Rogers & Pearson and later carried on legal duties as an administrator of several estates. He died March 9, 1834 of consumption.
