Scope and Content Note

The The Joseph Jenkins Knapp Papers consist of shipping papers and correspondence for this Newburyport, Massachusetts merchant and ship owner and are divided into two series.

Series I. Shipping Papers consist of receipts, bills, invoices, bonds, lists of ship stores, and instruments of protest. The bulk of the shipping papers relate to the brig Lady Washington and the ship Kingfisher. Miscellaneous shipping papers incorporate receipts and interest payments for unidentified ships.

Series II. Personal Papers is comprised of letters addressed to Knapp by several of his captains, as well as letters to and from family members. Miscellaneous family papers include an account book for the years 1862-63 by an unknown author and a copy of a farm plan (1895), the original dating from 1778, as well as a probate record from 1922.

Biographical Sketch

Joseph Jenkins Knapp (1805-1883) was the son of Anthony and Betsy (Cook) Knapp. A merchant of Newburyport, Massachusetts, he owned a number of ships, including the brig Lady Washington, the ship Kingfisher, and the ship Merrimac. His ships traveled to Paris, Liverpool, Canada, and Calcutta.

In addition to his mercantile activities, Knapp served as secretary of the Mutual Fire Insurance Company of Newburyport for forty years. He married Mary Pierce (1806-1877) in 1828. They had six children.
