Mrs. Alfred M. Frost Diary, circa 1900-1910

 Collection
Identifier: MSS 350

Scope and Content Note

This manuscript diary, circa 1900-1910, was kept by Mrs. Alfred Frost of Poughkeepsie, New York, and it records a five-week journey through southeastern China. She was accompanied by another, unidentified American and by two female American missionaries, Harriet L.? Osborne and Evelyn M. Worthley. The trip was accomplished by boat and sedan chair through Fuhkien (Fujian) Province from Foochow (Fuzhou) to Amoy (Xiamen) and back to Foochow by sea. The writer vividly records the sights and people she encountered, and her impressions and visits with and to other missionaries and missions. The photographs are exceptional in their composition and clarity.

The diary consists of 84 leaves and is illustrated by 121 photographs that relate to the text. These contain architectural views, Chinese at work or professions, missionary buildings and more.

The album measures 8-3/4 x 11 inches and is somewhat worn. The photographs are especially clear and bright. The text, while a bit soiled, is very legible. In addition, there are two inserted photographs and two colored photo-postcards of Amoy architecture views.
