Scope and Content Note

The David Pulsifer Papers contain: correspondence with Mary (Fletcher) Pulsifer, written during their engagement from 1822 until 1825; correspondence between David and other Fletcher family members; correspondence between Mary (Fletcher) Pulsifer and her family.; military papers documenting David Pulsifer's service in the Massachusetts Militia from 1820 to 1828; and a diary, or commonplace book, that is filled with poems and excerpts of poems chosen by David Pulsifer. The papers of William Henry Pulsifer, David's son, pertain to his service in the Navy during the Civil War.

Biographical Sketch

David Pulsifer was born on December 21, 1796, in Ipswich, Massachusetts, to David and Elizabeth Pulsifer. He worked as a painter. On June 7, 1825, he married Mary Chamberlain Fletcher (born 1805) of Chelmsford, the daughter of Josiah and Zilpah (Proctor) Fletcher. According to David's diary, he and Mary had become acquainted with each other in Salem in February 1822. They had one child together, Mary Fletcher Pulsifer, who was born in Salem on March 26, 1826; she died six months later. His wife Mary died on April 9, 1826.

David married his second wife, Elizabeth Savage Brown, of Salem, on July 10, 1832. He and Elizabeth had four children: Edward, Lizzie, Ellen, and William Henry Pulsifer. David died on December 3, 1867.
