Biographical Sketches
There were several Timothy Wellmans who were mariners during the time period of these papers. This is our best hypothesis as to who created the papers.
Timothy Wellman Jr. was born in about 1778, the son of Timothy (1756-1810) and Sarah (Wyatt) (1759-1817) Wellman. He was a master mariner and, with Benjamin Crowninshield, commanded the armed vessel Alexander, which was captured May 19, 1813.
He married Sarah Silsbee (1777-1840) in 1804 and they had two daughters, Mary Ann (1805-1886) and an infant in 1806. In 1833 he married Jane (Post) Sleeper (1785-1837). In 1839, he married Phebe R. Burns. He died on May 14, 1842, in Thomaston, Maine.
Timothy Wellman was born in Salem, Massachusetts, on September 12, 1776. He was a master mariner and died at sea in 1823 or 1824. He married Abigail Browne (1775-1860) in 1800 and they had five children: Adam, Nancy, Margaret, Augustus Timothy, and Mary Ann. This collection contains his estate papers.
