Scope and Content Note

The Daniel Rogers Family Papers include ships' papers, bills, receipts, legal documents, an account book, and correspondence created by Daniel Rogers, Daniel Rogers, Jr., his mother Rachel Rogers, and other Roger Family members. This collection has been arranged into two series.

Series I. Daniel Rogers, Jr. Papers include ships' papers, bills, receipts, and leases. This series has been arranged into two subseries. Subseries A. Ships' Papers include insurance policies, bills of sale, charter party documents, and surveys of the vessels owned and operated by Daniel Rogers, Jr. as a merchant out of Gloucester, Massachusetts. Many of the documents list the investors that helped Rogers, Jr. finance his voyages, including his brothers Timothy Rogers and Samuel Rogers. This material is arranged alphabetically by ship name. Subseries B. Personal Papers include bills and receipts of Rogers, Jr.'s expenses while he attended Harvard College from 1794 to 1798. Also included are receipts for taxes paid to the town of Gloucester and the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. There are also leases for rooms, an insurance policy, and sale of a pew at the South Meeting House in Beverly, Massachusetts. This material is arranged chronologically.

Series II. Family Papers include records created by various Rogers family members. There is an account book created by Daniel Rogers in 1770; this item is restricted but copies of the original can be viewed on Microfilm 120, Reel 5. Additionally in this series is a receipt for John Rogers, dated 1784, regarding supplies purchased over the course of three months, two leases for Rachel Rogers, and correspondence for Benjamin F. Rogers. This material has been arranged chronologically.

Biographical Sketch

Daniel Rogers (1734-1800) was born in Kittery, Maine on October 25, 1734 to Reverend John Rogers (1692-1773) and Susanna Whipple (1696-1770). He was a prominent merchant in Gloucester, Massachusetts and owned a number of vessels including schooners Britton, Ruby, Charming Nancy, and Esther. On November 6, 1759 he married Elizabeth Gorham (1739-1769) and the couple had six children: Lucy (1760-1793); John Gorham Rogers (1762-1802); Elizabeth Rogers (1764-1810); Charles Rogers (1765-1809); Daniel Rogers (1767-1768); and Daniel Rogers (1769-1769). After Elizabeth's death, Rogers married Rachel Ellery (1750-1833) on March 20, 1770. The couple had fifteen children together: Rachel Rogers (1771-1771); Rachel Rogers (1772-1773); Esther Rogers (1773-1838); Susannah Rogers (1775-1796); Mary Rogers (1777-1778); Daniel Rogers, Jr. (1778-1819); Timothy Rogers (1779-1826); Mary Rogers (b. 1780); Samuel Rogers (1781-1817); Shubael Gorham Rogers (b. 1783); William Rogers (1784-1826); George Rogers (1786-1792); Judith Rogers (1787-1860); Rachel Rogers (1789-1815); Fanny Rogers (b. 1792). In 1776, he was a representative to the Massachusetts General Court. Rogers died on January 4, 1800.

Daniel Rogers (1778-1819) was born in Gloucester, Massachusetts, on March 15, 1778 to Daniel Rogers (1734-1800) and Rachel Ellery (1750-1833). He graduated from Harvard College in 1798. He married Phoebe Homans (b.1779) on January 25, 1806. He was a merchant in Gloucester, Massachusetts, and was involved in the West Indies trade; he owned a number of vessels including schooners Adventure, Dover, Fish Hawk, Freedom, General Johnson, George, and the brigs Columbus and Hope. He died on October 14, 1819.

Provenance

The ships' papers were originally acquired on July 27, 1936 (acc. 9932). The John Rogers receipt was a gift of Edward W. Ford on April 13, 1945. The account book was acquired on February 6, 1927 using funds from the Martha G. Wheatland bequest. Additional material was found in the collection. Some of this material was originally arranged as Fam. Mss. 844a.
